PURPOSEACTION EVALUATION & TEACHING: On July 27th, United Power led an action with 461 people organized across our member institutions to secure the Mayor’s recommitment to Reclaiming Chicago, celebrate the new $10 million commitment of State of Illinois funds in the most recent state budget for Reclaiming Chicago and to celebrate the progress of completing 78 homes and starting on the next 75.

Now, with some distance and further evaluation within and among our member institutions, United Power members and leaders will gather to share lessons learned about the practice of public action and how we can use those lessons to inform our work together going forward.

Additionally, we will share updates on some of the progress since then and discuss how we can continue to build on the reactions generated that day. (A more detailed report and photos on the action will follow in the forthcoming late summer update)

LEVERAGING ORGANIZED PEOPLE POWER IN THIS POLITICAL MOMENT: 

The second focus of our time together will be to discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by the current political moment in our City, State and country. At the action we also lifted up some of the other threats and challenges presented to our communities: Medicaid cuts, property tax increases, threats to immigrant communities and other local neighborhood dynamics. We will consider proposals to utilize the tools of broad-based organizing so that we can find ways to act powerfully, strategically and effectively together and broaden the ways in which we are Reclaiming our communities.
