All Saints Greenlining Campaign (2020)
A Campaign for the Soul of our City
A Campaign for the Soul of our City
Acting with vision, the All Saints community along with faith communities across the city forged relationships with our neighbors in North Lawndale.
Called to Respond
In June of 2020, Richard Townsell and the North Lawndale Christian Development Corporation (LCDC) invited All Saints to help build the first of 1000 new affordable homes on the west side of Chicago. In response, All Saints launched the Greenlining Campaign with the ambitious goal to raise $215,000 to build a model home. Our bold hope was that this model home could serve as a catalyst to make this dream of Reclaiming Lawndale possible.
The Greenlining Campaign was so named to contrast and highlight the history of racist redlining policies, initiated by the federal government’s refusal to insure mortgages in or near Black neighborhoods, and reinforced by local government policies and the action of private institutions, has robbed people of color of wealth across generations. This history has left neighborhoods devastated by economic divestment and a lack of quality housing.
Thank you!
Thanks to the radical hope and generosity of over 375 donors, we raised over $259,000. Fully 58% of the donors to the Greenlining Campaign came from outside All Saints!
Two beautiful model homes now stand at 1621 and 1623 S Avers Ave. The homes are sturdy, thoughtfully designed, and beautifully decorated. Both have been sold. The money from the sale of these homes was used to fund more homes like them.
Always Something More
Reaching our fundraising target and the completion of these first two homes marked the end of the Greenlining Campaign. But our work responding to systemic racism is not done! While the Greenlining Campaign is complete, the dream has yet to be realized and the work to Reclaim Lawndale through homeownership continues. We will keep showing up and continue to organize our power for action from elected officials, and we will continue to strive for justice and peace.
