Dear Friends,

All Saints’ people take actions for social justice and hold dear our long-term commitments to local and international ministries. Our Mexico Outreach supports two parishes in Cuernavaca – San Pablo and Santísma Trinidad – where we have purchased everything from Bibles to a pick-up truck, and have funded classes and other projects.

Their Sunday school, adult formation, and lay leadership were thriving before the pandemic changed everything in Mexico. COVID-19 has devastated the economy and, as was the case here, in-person worship had to be canceled for many weeks. Although Padre Bayron Chanchavac, the priest who leads the parishes, is now holding services again, attendance is very low and income to support ministry has been greatly reduced.

So, our support is more important than ever as we raise $5,000 for this relationship. You can donate online here or send a check to All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 4550 N. Hermitage, Chicago, IL 60640. Please put “Mexico Outreach” in the memo line. Anyone who donates more than $50.00 will receive a gift of a butterfly pin, while those donating $25.00 to $49.00 will receive a bar of fragrant soap embossed with a butterfly. Our thanks to BA Church for making these “thank you” gifts possible.

Why a butterfly? The theme of this year’s effort is Efecta Mariposa – “The Butterfly Effect” – a reminder of two things – that the annual Monarch butterfly migration between central Mexico and the northern United States and Canada creates a tangible connection between us and our brothers and sisters there, and how, according to chaos theory, something as small as the fluttering wings of a Monarch butterfly can affect a much wider world. The people of All Saints’, San Pablo and Santísima Trinidad, working together, can do the same.

We typically enjoy a visit from Padre Bayron every year, but the pandemic prevented him from coming last May. We’ve arranged to have him join us virtually this Sunday for all three morning services. He and members of his congregations will bring us greetings. Then we’ll talk more about our relationship during the adult coffee-discussion group, “Brewed Awakenings”, at 10:15 am. Dave and Karen Howe, who have helped lead this ministry, will join us for conversation, share recent news, and answer questions. You can join Brewed Awakenings here

As I wrote to Padre Bayron recently, “All Saints está muy feliz de ser su socio en el ministerio. Esperamos poder destacar su trabajo y la conexión entre nosotros y ustedes el domingo 18 de octubre.” (All Saints is very happy to be your partner in ministry. We are looking forward to highlighting your work and the connection between us and you on Sunday, October 18.)

Please join in this Sunday as we celebrate Efecta Mariposa.

Blessings,
Stephen
