Dear Friends,
This Sunday is Good Shepherd Sunday. Each year on the fourth Sunday of Eastertide we read Jesus’ declaration “I am the Good Shepherd.” We chant or read the 23rd Psalm (“The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want”). We sing hymns about God as Shepherd, one of the most powerful images for God, since a Good Shepherd leads the sheep into good pasture, out of danger and into safety. Any church seeking to follow the Good Shepherd should do the same.
At All Saints, one of the ways we do this is through RCS, our food pantry, where we welcome people into the safety of our sanctuary on Tuesdays and then lead people through our building and up to the Parish Hall where nutritious food is laid out for the taking. On Thursdays, our food pantry takes good pasture and safety out to local elementary schools so that children and their families can choose fresh fruit and vegetables and hearty canned and dry goods right where they are.
RCS stretches every penny to feed neighbors, but, like All Saints, RCS also knows how to have fun! After all, we share the same DNA. So, their largest fundraiser is The Ravenswood Run, one of the last neighborhood runs in Chicago.
This Sunday is the 30th Ravenswood Run! When All Saints started the run three decades ago, it was staffed entirely by All Saints parishioners. Over the years, it has become more professional, but on race day we STILL need All Saints folks to be All In! The roles are easy, the hour is early, the joy is real.
